The girls got the cold that is going around and hitting everyone really hard. They were layed out with really bad coughs and fevers we just couldn't break for like 3 days. Ashlee was at 103 degrees and Carli was at 101 degrees, even on Motrin. And their poor, raspy coughs. So needless to say, it was a long week. Then, Chris took them to the doc just to check them over because Ashlee ended up throwing up, and not being able to break their fevers we thought better to spend the $30, then be sorry if they needed to be on something. So, doc says it's just whatever's going around but that Carli has an ear infection. So, we know she's allergic to Amoxicillin (her and Ashlee are), so they gave her Cefdinir, which she had already taken two or three other times. So she starts the antibiotic for her ear infection on Tuesday and on Thursday morning she had a major allergic reaction. She hadn't really slept in a week (which meant I hadn't slept in a week) because of her poor cough. So, she crawled in bed with me at 4:30am, and at 6:30am I woke up, looked at her, and this is what I saw.....
Her poor little face had totally swelled up like a balloon. I think from the lack of sleep for the past week I didn't panic, it kind of seemed par for the course for us. So I gave her Benadryl and it didn't take it down at all. I had put baby Vix on her throat/chest at like 4am because she was so conjested and I thought that may be why she was swollen. So I called my Pediatrian at 8am when they opened and they put me in freak out mode. Nothing sobers you up out of a sleep deprived state like the nurse acting like your daughter is going to go into anaphylactic shock and die any second. The nurse said that "if I had given her the Benadryl that long ago and nothing had changed her throat could swell up any time. At this point, it wasn't going to get better, only worse. If she went into Anaphylactic Shock there would be not time to get her anywhere and I needed to get her to an ER or Urgent Care immediately." I mean seriously, could I feel like a crappier mom? I immediatly think she is going to die on me any second and I should have rushed her to the ER at 6:30am when I woke up. But again, until the nurse SCARED ME TO DEATH, I was kind of on sick kid overload, sleep deprived, not thinking straight, doing the best I could mode. We rush to the Urgent Care they suggested, and as I'm checking her in sitting down to fill out paperwork, the receptionist says, "Um, is she have an allergic reaction to something?" At which point I broke down, started crying (yes, infront of everyone in the waiting room), said, "I don't know what she's having. I guess so. I have no idea." (CRAZY LADY IN AISLE 8!) So she told me to sit down, I think she felt bad I was upset, as was the man I sat down next to who looked at me sympathetically like I had a few screws loose, and filled out paperwork. She told me they would be RIGHT OUT TO GET ME. Thank the lord, because my daughter needed help, and I needed a Vicodin.
The Urgent Care doc couldn't tell 100% what the reaction was from, but her breathing was good, she was swallowing water, and didn't feel like there was any immediate danger. He thought it was probably her antibiotic. He said about 5% of people can be allergic to Amoxicillin and Cefdinir. Well, I think we just met those statistics doc! He put her on Antiobiotic #3, Steroids for her Swelling, and sent us home. The swelling lasted for another day and a half before I started to get my Carli back. Pretty bad scare, but Little C is back to normal now. Whew!
You don't have to feel bad if you looked at the pictures and laughed a little (if you click on them you can see them better). Now that we know she's okay, we laugh too. The night it happened I remember Carli watching cartoons, and Chris and I were just watching her. I looked at him and laughed and said, "That seriously does not even look like Carli." She was our little State Puff Carli for a few days.
